Chapter 5 – The Trigger Factor
Let’s take a turn now to the beginning. Let’s look at what causes these things to form inside of the mind of a killer as a child, and what it is that causes them to take the direction they take. As we have said before, we all start in the same way, so there are other things that have to come into play that mold these people into the killers they end up being.
So where does it all begin? What makes these killers tick? And what sets off that clock?
To better understand it, let’s again make it personal. After all, as dangerous as these people are, they are people, too, and they do have the same basic frame of mind that the rest of us do.
The ugly truth of the trigger factor
No matter what you are struggling with in life, there is a trigger that sets you off. Even if you don’t consider it to be a struggle, the thing that you like to do the most is often set off by some sort of action. This can be something blatant such as antagonizing, or it may be a lot more subtle. So subtle, in fact, you may not even know what it is.
If you are naturally inclined to do something, it doesn’t really matter what the trigger is, the action that you use as a response is going to be your reaction no matter what.
For example, if you were to have an issue with emotional eating, you are going to turn to eating for any kind of day you were having. If you were to have a good day, you would celebrate with food. If you were to have a bad day, you would make yourself feel better with food.
If you were nervous, food would be your distraction. See the pattern? Your trigger is completely different, but the action is the same. You get the promotion at work you have been dreaming about, here comes the ice cream. You got fired from your job unfairly and unexpectedly, here comes the same ice cream.
You don’t know when it started. For as long as you can remember you turned to food to make yourself feel a certain way. You don’t ever remember making the decision that food was going to be your go to, but you do remember choosing it.
Food is completely harmless in and of itself, but violence is not, and violent people are the same way. They may get scared, and fight. They may get happy, and be too rough. They may be mad, and take out their anger in a very violent way.
These people don’t remember when they decided that violence was the answer to their problems, but it is something that they have been doing for as long as they can remember, and with that being the case, they feel that violence really is the answer to anything that is happening in their lives.
Most violent offenders start young. This has been fairly well-known in the past, but it is becoming increasingly alarming.
